Confirmation Minister

Do you have enthusiasm for helping junior high-
age youth grow in faith?  Trinity Lutheran Church seeks a Confirmation Minister (non-clergy) to serve an average of 15 hours/week (plus camps and retreats) in leading our Faith Builder’s 7th and 8th Grade Confirmation Ministry. 

Applicants should also have experience in, and a passion for, calling, training, motivating, and mentoring small group leaders, youth counselors and teachers for confirmation ministries.

1. Choir Director:

a. Direct the Trinity Choir and / or selected soloists to sing music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition weekly for a Traditional worship service and for two such services on Easter Sunday, choosing all choral music in consultation with the Pastors.

b. Direct the Trinity Choir and / or selected soloists to sing music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition for sixteen Traditional special services, including services in the seasons of Lent, Easter, and Advent, choosing all choral music in consultation with the Pastors.

c. Direct the Trinity Choir for all choir rehearsals to include weekly rehearsals for 9 months and performances for special services including special soloist music for the same service during the summer.

d. Coordinate for the selection and or purchase of choral and other vocal music, within budgetary constraints in consultation with the Minister of Music, with all music being of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition.

2. Bell Choir Leader:

a. Direct the Bell Choir to play music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition for a Traditional worship service once a month for nine months and for two such services on Easter Sunday, choosing all music in consultation with the Pastors.

b. Direct the Bell Choir for all rehearsals to include weekly rehearsals for 9 months and for performances.

c. Coordinate for the selection and or purchase of music, within budgetary constraints in consultation with the Minister of Music, with all music being of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition.

3. Contemporary Music Leader:

a. Direct the Praise Band and / or selected soloists to sing music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition weekly for a Contemporary worship service, choosing all music in consultation with the Pastors.

b. Direct the Praise Band and / or selected soloists to sing music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition for eleven Contemporary special services, including midweek services twice a month for four month long periods of time, choosing all music in consultation with the Pastors.

c. Direct the Praise Band for all rehearsals to include rehearsals and performances for special services.

d. Coordinate for the selection and or purchase of music in consultation with the Minister of Music, with all music being of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition.

e. Play, with a high level of expertise, either guitar or piano as a part of the praise band for all services listed above.

4. Contemporary Musician: (could be more than one contract)

a. Play, with a high level of expertise, as a part of the praise band weekly for a Contemporary worship service, under the musical direction of the contemporary music leader.

b. Play, with a high level of expertise, as a part of the praise band for eleven Contemporary special services, including midweek services twice a month for four month long periods of time.

c. Play with the Praise Band for all rehearsals to include rehearsals and performances for special services.

5. Youth Choir Director

a. Direct the Youth Choirs and / or selected youth soloists to sing music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition monthly for a Traditional worship service or for a Contemporary worship service, with six per service per year, choosing all music in consultation with the Pastors.

b. Direct the Youth Choirs and / or selected soloists to sing music of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition for 2 Traditional and two Contemporary special services, choosing all choral music in consultation with the Pastors.

c. Direct the Youth Choirs for all choir rehearsals to include weekly rehearsals for 9 months and performances for special services and for VBS during the summer.

d. Coordinate for the selection and or purchase of choral and other vocal music, within budgetary constraints in consultation with the Minister of Music, with all music being of a high quality in the Lutheran liturgical tradition.

In order to help you understand the scope of work, this is our current yearly worship calendar:

1. Every Sunday: 0830 Traditional Service & 1045 Contemporary service, with an additional Traditional service on Easter Sunday.

2. Contemporary midweek services:

- 1st & 3rd Wed. at 6:30pm for the four months with Confirmation (Jan & Feb; Sep & Oct.)

- One Christmas Eve Service.

3. Traditional midweek services

- Wed. night services for three weeks in Advent (Dec. 3, 10, & 17)

- Two night services on Christmas Eve.

- Wed. night service for the 6weeks after Ash Wed. (Feb. 25 – Apr. 1 2009)

- Holy Week (Week before Easter: Apr 6-11 09): Evening services: Maundy Thurs and Good Friday,

CONFIRMATION MINISTER


Position Overview:   
The Confirmation Minister provides leadership for Trinity Lutheran Church’s confirmation ministry – including overall visioning, curriculum selection, planning, implementation and regular evaluation.  Confirmation ministry includes learning, worship, service, and fellowship over a two year period through required experiences such as midweek sessions, camps, retreats, Sunday School, and worship.  The Confirmation Minister is staff liaison to the Youth Education Ministry Team, and he/she calls and mentors members who serve in confirmation ministries.  The Confirmation Minister will recommend and develop ministries that reflect the teachings of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) with guidelines set by the Council. The Confirmation Minister works as a team member with pastors and other staff members to help achieve overall outcomes of the church.

FLSA status:              Exempt

Principal Responsibilities:

1.  Coordinates the visioning, planning, implementation, and regular evaluation of confirmation ministries in cooperation with the Associate Pastor. This includes calling, training, and providing leadership to members (e.g., small group leaders, youth/adult camp counselors) who serve in children and youth education ministries and mentoring them in their growth.

2.  Evaluates, recommends, and plans curriculum for confirmation ministries including midweek sessions, camps, retreats, and Sunday school classes that reflect the teachings of the ELCA within guidelines set by the Council.  

3. Coordinate and share teaching responsibilities for the confirmation ministry.
 
4. Coordinate the training, scheduling, and support of acolyte ministry, and other service learning.

5.  Insure that enrollment, attendance, assignments, and other program elements (e.g., health forms, photo releases) are tracked for confirmation ministries.

6.  Work cooperatively with the pastors, Children & Family Minister, Youth Minister, and staff in order to engage families in the ministries of Trinity Lutheran Church and help them grow in faith.  Special focus is given to the transition from elementary years into confirmation and from confirmation to high school youth ministry.

7.  Insure that confirmation ministries are planned and implemented with attention to the safety of all who are involved (e.g., appropriate supervision, choosing safe events, confidentiality, physical health concerns.)

8.  Serve as primary staff liaison with the Youth Education Ministry team.  Work with them includes mentoring team leaders and encouraging and equipping them for ministry.

9.  Prepares a confirmation ministry monthly report for Church Council, an annual report to the Congregation, and regular print and electronic communication for ministries.

10.  Participates in staff meetings and retreats, and works closely and collaboratively with the Pastors, Children and Family Minister, Youth Minister, Music Minister and entire staff.

11.  Responsible for planning the confirmation ministry budget in collaboration with the pastoral team, and for ongoing stewardship of this ministry’s financial resources.

12.  Performs other duties needed to support the mission and ministry of TELC as appropriate and with discussion.
   
Position Qualifications:
1.  Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Master’s Degree in Education, Theology, or a related field is preferred.

2.  Knowledge of ELCA theology and practice, with experience in ELCA confirmation education preferred.

3.  Experience in and a passion for calling, training, motivating, and mentoring small group leaders, youth counselors and teachers for confirmation ministries and enthusiasm for helping people grow in faith.

4.  Must be able communicate effectively junior high youth, and their families.

5.  Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow through for effective outcomes. 

6.  Must have basic computer skills including some knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to use the internet. 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
Typical office environment with occasional lifting of over 25 pounds required.  Keyboarding duties may require sitting and viewing computer monitor for extended periods of time.  Corrected vision and hearing in normal range required for greeting visitors, answering phones, and interacting with others.  Work hours include weekend activities, overnight retreats, and outdoor activities.  Travel is required for camps.
